GMC Denali XT hints at small unibody pickup:

In what can be seen as the spiritual successor to the Caballero (or Chevrolet El Camino), GMC will bring the Denali XT concept to the Chicago auto show this week.

GMC tapped Holden Design of General Motors' Australian arm to design and build the concept.

The Denali XT serves as a test bed for future GMC design. A wide, hunkered-down stance together with short overhangs, flared fenders and low roofline give the concept racy looks. Ride height can be lowered further with the adjustable air suspension. An updated GMC grille is featured in front with signature Denali chrome mesh background.

For the four-passenger interior, Holden sprinkles in billet trim pieces and contrasts them with saddle leather seats. Passengers have high seating positions due to the Denali XT's high-cowl architecture.

The Denali XT uses a unibody platform and sits on four-wheel independent suspension. The rear cargo box is flat, with no intrusions needed for the suspension or wheelhouses. A midgate between the bed and passenger cabin can be lowered and rear seats folded flat to haul long items. The maximum payload is estimated at 1,100-pounds.

Power for the Denali XT a 4.9-liter V8 with direct-injection, capable of burning E85, joined with GM's Two Mode hybrid system.

With an estimated output of 326 hp, the engine makes just 6 hp less than the 6.0-liter V8 found in the GMC Yukon Hybrid. Also, high-efficiency axles and an active thermal management system that transfers thermal energy from one driveline component to another further reduce energy loss.
